Minutes 1932-1960.

The records contain the minutes of the Board of Foreign Missions (BFM) of the American Lutheran Church (initially called the Joint Board of Foreign Missions) and the Executive Committee (incomplete). There are also cover letters sent with the minutes, minutes of special meetings, and, in later years, exhibits from meetings. Until 1943 separate minutes were kept for the New Guinea Section and the India Section, which were sub-committees of the BFM. These section committee minutes are kept with records from each country, although reports are included from each field with the BFM minutes. The minutes are loose mimeographed copies. An index of the minutes from 1932-1949 is included at the beginning of the first box. These minutes were microfilmed in 1973. There are no minutes for 1930-1932, 1935, and 1937. Based upon the numbering system, there are a few missing from later years as well. The numbering of the meetings jumps from 15 for the July 1940 meeting to 5 for the July 1941 meeting, with no reason given for the change in numbering.

The ALC met as a delegate body biennially in October, the time and place of which was determined by the president and Board of Trustees. All boards and standing committees sent their reports to the president at least sixty days before the convention, so that he could have them printed and sent to the delegates twenty days before the biennial meeting.
